KAB :
When did you first discover you have a love to fight ?
Sybil Starr :
I have been aggressive, hyper active and physical
my whole life. In Kindergarten I got kicked off the bus for knocking a 1st grade boy's tooth out. . . when they asked me why I did it, all I could say was "It was loose anyway."
In later years I discovered running, and I ran my first marathon in 2004, but during the training for the marathon, I was often running in strange, unlit places late at night and it made me realize how vulnerable I was. I did not like that feeling, so I looked into self-defence courses and at the University of Michigan (where I was employed) there was a BJJ club. . so I stopped in to check out what they taught and to see if it was for me. . . at my very first class the instructor was pointing to me as an example (and being the only girl there, that was pretty cool!) "Watch her, see how she does it?" So you could say I took to it instantly, like a duck takes to water.
KAB : You're
a late comer to the arts, do you wish you had discovered martial arts
earlier in life ?
Sybil Starr :
Yes, but when the student is ready the teacher is
provided. I was not ready before that.
KAB : What
do you like so much about fighting ?
Sybil Starr :
I truly believe that it is what I am
made to do. It feels right. My body knows it, I know it. I love the physical contact, the competition, the challenge, and the workout.
KAB :
Would you say fighting comes naturally to you ?
Sybil Starr :
I guess so. I really am just a dorky, clumsy girl who likes to fight.
KAB :
We have read
you grew up with two brothers beating crap out of each other all the time fighting, when was the first time you got toe to toe with another girl ?
Sybil Starr :
Hmm. . I don't know. . it may not have been until
the last couple of years.

KAB : What
is different about fighting or wrestling a girl as opposed to a man ?
Sybil Starr :
Woman are very fierce fighters. KAB :
We could not argue with that, but are you
saying men are not fierce fighters ?
Sybil Starr :
No, Men fight to win. Many have this
thing called testosterone which makes it very hard for them to submit, even when in a hold that would injure them. It is the intensity of the fight with women that is different.
|
KAB :
Are you saying women know when to quit and men don't ?
Sybil Starr :
Hmm. . yes and no. . . it is strange. . I guess when I fight men, I
don't care if I win or not. I hate to submit, but there is no
shame in losing to someone stronger and bigger than I am... unless
it is a woman. . LOL KAB :
Girls have a reputation for being more
vicious and fight dirtier than men, have you found this to be true ?
Sybil Starr :
oh yes, by far KAB :
What will a woman do that a man will not ?
Sybil Starr :
I don't know if there is something they
do that men don't. . it is more about the way they do it. KAB :
Who has been the your toughest female
wrestling opponent in competition ?
Sybil Starr :
Lia Labowe and a Jersey gal named Keri
KAB : What
makes Lia and Keri stand out in this regard ?
Sybil Starr :
Sometimes an opponent makes you go way down deep
inside yourself and bring out your best so that you can win or at least stay in the fight and both these opponents have made me have to do that.
KAB :
How did you become involved in wrestling ?
Sybil Starr :
hmm. . running then BJJ, and modelling at the same time. . I got contacted by a great company out of Grand Rapids, MI to come work for them, (they do sexy martial art sites), Lusa Entertainment, and at the same time I got contacted by Dan "The Beast" Severn's fight company "Danger Zone" about being a ring girl. One thing led to another with each of these opportunities. . and I knew that I was following my destiny. . I started training with Dan in March of last year (2005) in both MMA style fighting and Pro-wrestling. The owners of Lusa taught me some Judo take downs, and Dan has only added to my knowledge of take downs also.

KAB :
What are the rules for the competitive wrestling
you've done, how is victory secured ?
Sybil Starr :
Much of what I have done is not
sanctioned, it is more underground. . I often think of myself as a modern female gladiator. . . for most matches we set up our own rules by agreement before the match and we have to keep
honourable
during the match and keep to our agreements. but with submission wrestling, if you can get them to submit, you get the fall.
KAB : Do you
think there is a need for a sanctioning body to regulate this form of
unsanctioned recreational wrestling ?
Sybil Starr :
Then what? More bureaucracy? Some one else's rules come into play? No thank you. I think we regulate it pretty well ourselves. KAB :
Do you have any particular
favourite moves or tactics when wrestling ?
Sybil Starr :
I love to scissor, but with a foot injury at the
beginning of the year, my fight regimen has become much more well rounded
